Most of life is fuzzy. Our AI should understand that.
Trust through Transparency
FLAIR brings together students and researchers who build AI that can explain itself, using fuzzy logic.
A short history of fuzzy logic

1965
Lotfi A. Zadeh 1921 to 2017
Fuzzy sets
At UC Berkeley, Lotfi Zadeh publishes "Fuzzy Sets", a mathematics for things that are partly true. It starts the field.

FLAIR raises public awareness of fuzzy logic and explainable AI, and builds a community that grows fuzzy logic in Cincinnati and around the world.

Ghent University
Home of the Fuzziness and Uncertainty Modelling research group.
University of Texas at El Paso
Home of Vladik Kreinovich's long-running work on fuzzy and interval computation.
UC Berkeley
Where Lotfi Zadeh introduced fuzzy sets in 1965.

University of Granada
Home of SCI2S, a research group on soft computing and intelligent systems.
University of Ostrava
Home of an institute for fuzzy modeling and approximate reasoning.
Listed for reference. These organizations and universities are not FLAIR sponsors unless stated.
Most human judgment lives somewhere between 0 and 1.
Try it
Fuzzy logic in ten seconds
Move the slider. A yes or no rule flips at a hard line. Fuzzy logic says how much each word fits, so the answer can explain itself.
Yes or no logic
Warm? Yes.
Warm means exactly 15 to 25 °C. One degree changes everything.
Fuzzy logic
- Cold0.02
- Warm0.86
- Hot0.19
Each word fits to a degree between 0 and 1.
Our vision: an explainable AI-first world, where every AI system that touches people's lives can be understood, trusted, and certified.
